I'm reading a book at the moment, "The Autobiography of the British Soldier" by John Lewis-Stempel. It's in their own words and sometimes you just wonder. I'm damn glad I was a sailor.

There's a coincidence. I'm reading Sovereign of the Seas, the history of British sea power.

And here's another - I have Sovereign of the Seas (David Howarth?), bought years ago in a second hand book shop and a very good read.

I've just finished watching a documentary about the USA's defence services and the level of sexual assault up to rape.
Many were committed by senior officers on lesser commissioned ranks.
The survey revealed that 20% of females serving had been assaulted.
In 2011, five sued for compensation in a joint action. Their claim was dismissed on the grounds that "sexual assault was an occupational hazard" in military service.

One who'd had her jaw smashed, resulting in the deterioration of the discs in her upper neck was refused medical attention and is in constant pain.
One Army (Sgt) CID investigator was raped by her boss. The matter was investigated next day and the investigation abandoned three days later.
One offender whose action was witnessed by another woman received the 'airman of the Year' award while under investigation. He was never charged.
One marine captain (a single woman), posted after serving in Iraq to the elite Whitehouse barracks unit was raped by her 2IC.
He was convicted of adultery and profane language.

Yes, the "....home of the brave".

"Sexual Assault" is becoming an occupational hazard in life let alone the services GG. When I was in the services a while ago now, the stories we heard of what went on on the American Carriers made your hair curl. No go areas for whites or blacks or hispanics. Shift workers being escorted to their place of duty. It just seemed a nightmare. Have heard a few tales of the a similar sort of situation in the Falklands. Once again it comes down to the fact that it seems almost impossible today to convict people and to punish.

Saw Prince Andrew speak at a memorial event as senior colonel of someone at the end of an Antiques Roadshow last night with the theme of military service, some of it quite touching.
Seems to have put on a few lb/kg but spoke sense with sensitivity, all without a cue sheet or constantly stumbling for the right words so that they couldn't be used against him.
High marks for authenticity, some work needed on delivery.

In addition to 'seeing-eye' dogs and hearing dogs, the first placements have been made here of companion dogs with combat veterans. They are trained to wake the sleeping veteran if he is having apparent nightmares, probably reliving some horror incident.

And the government has finally issued white entitlement cards that allow unlimited psychology and/or psychiatry consultations where the veteran can show need. It's taken far too long and too many have suicided or lost their family relationships for want of support. My son received his in the week of our ANZAC Day memorial events. The local Dawn Service, always well supported, had an attendance that looked to be up by 30% this year.
